Rain Machinations

Bangalore is getting it’s share of annual rainfall. I can tell by the amount of toddler pajamas I am hanging on my washing line every morning. Each to their own devices, I guess. And my son would like to say that “the Sun is going on sleeping coz it doesn’t want to get wet in the rain and catch a cold.” Like I said, each to their own. He is yet to learn how romantic a natural shower can be.

But isn’t it wonderful? How magical must it be for him? Imagine this. The sky changes colour from aqua blue to grey and purple. Tiny droplets of water, suddenly rush down from the skies, till it almost looks like hundreds of miniscule steady streams pouring down on every object around. And just as suddenly, it stops, leaving pools of water (which are so wonderful to jump into and splash, even though Ma says no). The most beautiful part is, he doesn’t know the reason behind it. No process of evaporation, water table blah blah. And this is just one of the miracles he sees every day.

I do feel we might enjoy natural processes so much more if we didn’t have an explanation behind them. I mean, you go to sleep in a black space on your bed, and for a long time, you keep seeing weird scenes, which sometimes involve you too. But finally when you open your eyes, there is a big ball of fire hanging outside your window, and all is bright and warm. And people around you are much more receptive now, than they were when you tried to call them before the ball of fire came out.

Or how about this. The lady you call Ma (yes, the one who is so nice to you and always there when you need something {at least that's what I would like to believe}) puts you in a tub full of a beautiful liquid. While you can see it, you can also see what’s on the other side. And you can’t really hold it, no matter how much you grab. Plus, it makes so many quaint noises.

Well, that was fun – getting into my son’s innocent little head. Maybe science, knowledge and logic aren’t that great after all. But curious Mankind will soon find his answers before moving on to the next question. And hey, rain is still awesome – whether you are trying to be Katrina Kaif in it, or just watching it pour down your window with a cup of coffee.
